NORTH AND SOUTH, BOOK II
Based
on John Jakes' best selling novels, this is the continuing saga
of the Hazards and the Mains. The Hazards are a wealthy
Pennsylvania steel family from the North, and the Mains own a
Southern plantation that keep slaves. George Hazard and Orry Main
met at West Point and fought in the Spanish American War
together, becoming fast friends. Now they find themselves
fighting on opposite sides of the Civil War and must struggle to
maintain their friendship through these troubled times. In
episode 5 of this popular miniseries, James Morrison played
Captain Bradley.
After returning
home from many months in a notorious, confederate prison, George
Hazard is greeted with yet more horrible news. Loyal to General
Hazard, Captain Bradley delivers a warning about an impending
arrest.
"The War Department has had complaints for almost two years
about defective weapons made by Axle Iron Works. Do you know
anything about such a company?" After a negative response,
Captain Bradley continues, "A formal investigation wasn't
started until recently, and they found that Axle Iron is a front
for another arms manufacturer, Hazard Iron. They verified that
these cannons were made from cheap metals which caused some of them to
explode after prolonged use. I'm afraid some soldiers on the gun
crews have been killed as a result. Apparently, the General's
signature appears on several incriminating documents which
connect the two companies. I'm afraid all the evidence seems to
be against you, General."
Bradley proffers Hazard the name of a metals dealer who is also
under investigation for these crimes. Realizing he can prove
himself innocent of the allegations, Hazard heads out on his own
to find the real criminals.
