City Theatre is a professional theatre company dedicated to the solicitation, development and production of a genre completely unique to our cultural community -- short (one-act) comedies, dramas and musicals by established and emerging playwrights from South Florida and throughout the nation. Since its inception in 1996, the company has produced a wealth of exciting new short plays, developed collaborative relationships with a growing number of regional and national theatre artists, and produced entertaining and innovative festivals of original plays and educational programs in South Florida. The company's acclaimed annual Summer Shorts Festival is one of the nation's premier forums for the development of new work, bringing together on one stage a rich array of regional and national actors, directors, designers and playwrights.

Taking a leadership role in the presentation of new work, City Theatre has created a series of groundbreaking year round programs. These include the award-winning Summer Shorts and Winter Shorts festivals, the educational Short Cuts school and community tours, the unique KidShorts Project for student playwrights, the distinctive CityDialogues Guest Artist Series and New Plays Project, and the popular Festival Series at Books and Books and at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. As a regional organization, City Theatre has successfully created exciting and accessible productions that attract thousands of theatergoers to venues both majestic and intimate in Dade and Broward Counties.

In addition to earned revenue, City Theatre receives support from a broad base of government, educational, corporate, foundation, and individual funders. Significantly, in 1999 Lucent Technologies made an important 5-year commitment as Summer Shorts’ title sponsor, and in 2000 City Theatre won an important 2-year grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to develop CityDialogues. In 2002 City Theatre was one of the highest scoring arts groups nationally to receive advanced marketing training and implementation funding as part of the National Arts Marketing Project, sponsored by the Arts & Business Council and American Express. City Theatre's government funding sources include the National Endowment for the Arts, the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Broward Cultural Affairs Council and the cities of Coral Gables and Miami Beach.

In only a few years, City Theatre has come to be recognized by audiences, artists, critics and supporters alike as an organization that is playing an increasingly important role in developing original works and creating professional programming unique to our region. City Theatre is proud of its past achievements and collaborations, and looks forward to providing audiences with exciting productions which will enlighten, educate and entertain.
